OCRWM is required to comply with regulations issued by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission as delineated in Chapter 1 of Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations. These regulations require that we implement a quality assurance program to ensure that our activities are performed in a manner that protects the health and safety of the public.
The following excerpt from 10 CFR 63, Disposal of High-Level Radioactive Wastes in a Geologic Repository at Yucca Mountain, Nevada, defines the scope of the quality assurance program that we are required to implement for work related to Yucca Mountain:
"As used in this part, quality assurance comprises all those planned and systematic actions necessary to provide adequate confidence that the geologic repository and its structures, systems or components will perform satisfactorily in service.”
The regulations further define the requirements for a quality assurance program 10 CFR 63, Subpart G.
Other parts of the regulations contain similar requirements for Quality Assurance as it applies to the transportation and storage of nuclear waste. Transportation of nuclear waste is included in OCRWM's mission and related activities will be subject to quality assurance requirements. Storage of nuclear waste is not currently included in OCRWMs mission, however, if Congress authorizes OCRWM to develop an interim storage site, that work will also be subject to quality assurance requirements.
