Voluntary Protection Program

On August. 29, 2007, the U.S. Department of Energy Voluntary Protection Program for the third consecutive year awarded "STAR" status to Bechtel SAIC Company, LLC, the management and operating contractor for the Yucca Mountain Project.

Within the Department of Energy, this is like winning an Oscar for safety and health.

This recognition is based on the organization’s safety record and on the safety mindset of its employees. To qualify, Bechtel SAIC went through an extensive application and review process, which involved onsite audits and interviews with employees.

In addition, the Voluntary Protection Programs Participants' Association (VPPPA) has just awarded BSC their Mentoring Champion Award. The VPPPA is a nonprofit organization of more than 1,600 companies and worksites with the goal of assisting each other in gaining and retaining VPP status. The VPPPA’s mentoring program matches sites seeking VPP recognition with sites that have already achieved VPP Star status.

The Department of Energy’s Voluntary Protection Program provides guidelines for contractors and subcontractors to go beyond compliance with departmental directives and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards. This program encourages a creative stretch for excellence through systematic approaches and cooperative efforts involving managers, employees, and the Department of Energy.

The Voluntary Protection Program closely parallels the OSHA Voluntary Protection Program, which has demonstrated that cooperation among government, industry, and labor can achieve excellence in worker health and safety.
