Friedrich Air Conditioning Company (room air conditioner), EPA Referral Letter. After being notified by the DOE that a model of room air conditioner manufactured by Friedrich was in violation of Energy Star efficiency requirements, Friedrich responded by suggesting testing practices to alter the energy use of the product. Finding that these practices were not included in the product packaging/instructions, DOE found these responses insufficient to mitigate its energy efficiency findings. Friedrich also requested that ASHRAE Standard 16-1983 (RA99), which would change the results based on barometric pressure in the test lab, be applied, though it was not implemented at the time of DOE testing. This shift could bring the model within Energy Star compliance. The matter is then referred to the EPA.
