The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the Iowa Stored Energy Park (ISEP) are conducting a free, 1-hour webinar, Lessons from Iowa: The Economic, Market, and Organizational Issues in Making Bulk Energy Storage Work, on Thursday, February 9, 2012 at 1 p.m. ET. Presenters include Dr. Imre Gyuk of DOE’s Office of Electricity Deliverability and Energy Reliability and Bob Schulte from ISEP.

The webinar was original scheduled for January 20, 2012, but experienced technical difficulties due to the large number of participants and was rescheduled. All participants must reregister.

The Infrastructure Security and Energy Restoration (ISER) Division of the Office of Electricity Delivery and Energy Reliability (OE) is publishing a new newsletter, the Energy Emergency Preparedness Quarterly, designed to briefly highlight a few of the OE/ISER energy preparedness activities that occur each quarter.

The proceedings from the DOE's April 2011 workshop, “Computational Needs for the Next Generation Electric Grid,” are now available. The workshop brought together some of the Nation’s leading researchers and experts to identify computational challenges associated with the operation and planning of the electric power system.

The proceedings include seven white papers and their related responses and summaries, as well as the workshop agenda and comments collected after the workshop.

As part of the Obama Administration’s efforts to enhance the security and reliability of the nation’s electrical grid, U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu today announced an initiative to further protect the electrical grid from cyber attacks.

As part of its annual awards ceremony, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) recently honored three individuals working on projects funded by the Office of Electricity & Energy Reliability for their leadership and contributions to engineering. Additionally, an education industry publication recognized the Emergency Support Function #12 (ESF #12) team within OE’s Infrastructure Security & Energy Restoration (ISER) Division with an annual Learning in Practice award for excellence in e-learning.

The 2012 National Electricity Forum will be held on February 8 and 9, 2012, and is sponsored by the DOE Office of Electricity Delivery and Energy Reliability and the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC). Online registratin is now closed; participants are welcome to register onsite.

The Department has funded an effort at the Power Systems Engineering Research Center (PSERC) to investigate the requirements of an electric grid with high penetrations of sustainable energy systems and heavy reliance on cyber systems for sensing and communication. The goal of the effort is to stimulate discussion among the academic, industry, and government communities on what it will take to shape the future grid for the mid-21st Century.

The Department released the January 2012 issue of the ARRA Energy Assurance Planning Bulletin (EAPB). The ARRA EAPB is issued quarterly to provide information on energy assurance planning resources, upcoming events, training opportunities, and important grant deliverable dates. This is the ninth issue of the EAP Bulletin; previous issues are available for download.
