Individual protection standards (click to enlarge)

The Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) public health protection standards for Yucca Mountain address all potential pathways of radiation exposure: air, groundwater, and soil.

The EPA's standards limit an individual's annual radiation exposure from all pathways (ingestion, inhalation, physical contact, etc.) to no greater than 15 millirem per year. This limit is based on what the EPA considers an acceptable risk to society. (In the United States, a person's average background radiation dose is about 360 millirem per year.)
