Scientific instruments
at the surface of Devil’s
Hole in Nevada.
|
Scientists have found an area about
30 miles from Yucca Mountain that
offers a unique geology for studying
past climates.
This area, called “Devils
Hole,” is a surface fracture
about 6 feet wide that allows entry
into an extensive underground cave.
Over millions of years, groundwater
left deposits of minerals on the
rock within Devils Hole. By studying
these deposits, scientists developed
a record of the area’s climate
conditions over the last half-million
years.
